He wanted avid gardeners to have information more readily available about the impressive array of flowering plants that could flourish in their gardens and greenhouses. Thus the botanical prints.Curtis began publishing the Curtis Botanical Magazine in 1787. In elegant, classic botanical prints, the illustrations in the magazine depict familiar and unusual plants, along with their scientific and common names. Bock by Alsatian Humanist Johannes Sapidus (Hans Witz).Hieronymus Bock ,(1498 - 1554), also known under his latinised name Hieronymus Tragus, was a German botanist, physician, and Lutheran minister who began the transition from medieval botany to the modern scientific worldview by arranging plants by their relation or resemblance. His 1546 Kreuterbuch or "herbal" was illustrated by the artist David Kandel. In the wine world, Bock is noted for having the first documented use of the modern word Riesling in 1552 when it was mentioned in his Latin herbal.German text. Please do not mind flash reflection on images. Thank you. David Kandel was one of the earliest and greatest pioneers of botanical art. His beautifully rendered images opened the eyes of many as to the wonderful varieties of plant life. Yet, as is the case with many Renaissance artists, surprisingly little is known of his life.David Kandel was the son of a Strasburg citizen and was probably born in that city. We know he was married in 1554 and owned a house in 1587. His activities as a woodcut artist are varied. He designed several portraits, some Biblical scenes, animal studies, topographical views and a number of valuable, early maps. His greatest works, however, are his botanical woodcuts, and of these, nothing surpasses his work for the Kreuterbuch of Hieronymus Bock. This woodcut originates from this tremendous 1546 study, which critically examined a large number of herbs, plants and trees, drawing upon recent investigations and theories by medieval and ancient writers. The most outstanding feature of the Kreuterbuch was the 550 woodcuts designed by David Kandel. The superb artistry and accuracy of these woodcuts set new standards for botanical art. Kandel’s woodcut of the Cappes Kraut (the cabbage) is a prime example of his highly prized art. The foliage, flowers and even the root systems are all handled with the combination of detail and delicacy which is unique to the great era of the Renaissance woodcut.PLEASE VIEW OUR PICTURES CAREFULLY Very good overall condition. Background William Curtis (1746-1799) is one of the greatest names in the field of botanical illustration. His 'Botanical Magazine' has become the world's most famous and longest-running Botanical Periodical, published almost uninterrupted from 1787 to the present day. It is published today by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The early volumes are renowned for the quality of the hand-colored plates, which are highly sought after. The principal artists employed in these early volumes were William Kilburn, James Sowerby and Sydenham Edwards, all of whom were, to varying degrees, protégés of Curtis, and amongst the FINEST ILLUSTRATORS OF THEIR DAY. In addition to their work for the 'Botanical Magazine', they worked for Curtis on his 'Flora Londinensis', and all three became famous in their own right - Kilburn for his fabric designs, Sowerby for 'English Botany' and Edwards for his 'Botanical Register'. <div align="justify">1578 BORCHT LETTUCE 2 hc WDCTS from A NIEVVE HERBALL LETTUCE 2 fine hand coloured woodcuts on one leaf. Text in English. London. 1578. Woodcut by van der Borcht in fine hand colour. Uncoloured woodcut of Buphthalmum to verso. Leaf: 11.6 x 7.2 inches. This original leaf comes from: REMBERTUS DODONAEUS (1517-1585) A NIEVVE HERBALL, OR HISTORIE OF PLANTES wherin is contayned the vvhole discourse and perfect description of all sortes of Herbes and Plantes: their divers et sundry kindes: ... First set foorth in the Doutche or Almaigne tongue, by that learned D. Rembert Dodoens, Physition to the Emperour: And nowe first translated out of French into English, by Henry Lyte Esquyer. AT LONDON by me Gerard Dewes, dwelling in Pawles Churchyarde at the signe of the Swanne, 1578. Rembert Dodoens (Mechelen June 29, 1517 – Leyden March 10, 1585) was a Flemish physician and botanist, also known under his Latinized name Rembertus Dodonaeus. Dodoens' herbal Cruydeboeck with 715 images (1554) was influenced by that of Leonhart Fuchs. He divided the plant kingdom in six groups. It treated in detail especially the medicinal herbs, which made this work, in the eyes of many, a pharmacopoeia. It was translated first into French in 1557 by Charles de L'Ecluse ('Histoire des Plantes') and later into Latin in 1583. THIS BEAUTIFUL LEAF IS FROM THE VERY RARE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF 1578. Dodoens is commemorated in the plant genus Dodonaea, which was named after him by Carolus Linnaeus. This fine woodcut leaf was drawn by Pieter van der Borcht and cut on wood by Arnaud Nicolai. Dodoens was from 1574 through 1578 the personal physician to the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian II as well as Rudolph II. Pieter (or Petrus or Pierre) van der Borcht was born in the city of Malines (Mechelen), southwest of Antwerp in the Netherlands, around 1540 (some say 1545). He died around 1608. He is thought to have been the son of Jacques van der Borcht, also an artist, who in 1562 became the doyen of the painter's guild in Malines. The first published artwork attributed to the younger van der Borcht was printed in 1552 by Jacob van Liesvelt in a book titled Dat Vyants net der booser wercken. In 1565 van der Borcht received a commission from Plantin to make 60 drawings of plants for a herbarium by Rembert Dodoens, the Frumentorum, leguminum, palustrium et aquatilium herbarum historia. Dodoens was also a citizen of Malines, and it is likely that he recommended van der Borcht for the job. Pieter's work so pleased both author and publisher that he was soon the usual illustrator for Plantin's numerous botanical books. !! THIS IS AN ORIGINAL WOODCUT LEAF FROM 1578 !! In very good condition.WE ARE HAPPY TO COMBINE SHIPPING!! Daniel Good Rare Books, Saxlingham, Holt, Norfolk ENGLAND.</div>
